How do I get wireless internet at home or my business?

First, Contact us and speak to one of our friendly staff to see if your home qualifies. Our staff will locate your home on our mapping system, and perform some calculations to determine if there is a possible “line of sight” between your location and our towers. If it appears that we may have a line of sight to our local tower(s), we will schedule an appointment for our Installation Technician to come to your location to verify the signal quality. Once signal is verified, we will then install the necessary equipment to bring internet access to your location. At the time of installation, our Technician will install a small radio antenna at your home, and then install an Ethernet cable into your home to plug into your computer.

Do I have to be home during the installation?

Yes. We require that the person who will be the owner of the account to be present for the entire installation. The Technician provides our Terms of Service to the account owner, and the document needs to be signed by the account owner at the time of installation. Our Technician will not be able to do an On-Site Evaluation or installation at a location where no one is present, and we cannot, under any circumstances, do an installation without an adult present. If the Technician arrives and no one is home, or if only a minor is present, we must reschedule the appointment.

How long does the installation take?

The installation usually takes about 1-3 hours to complete, depending on the difficulty of the installation.

What should I have ready for the technician when he gets here?

  1. Wireless Router - If you plan to use just one wired device, such as a PC or a laptop, then we will simply connect an Ethernet cable directly into your computer, in which case you won’t need a router. However, if you plan to use more than one device, or if you want to use any of your devices wirelessly (WiFi), then you need to provide your own wireless router. Please note that GigaLinx does not provide routers.  We recommend that when purchasing a router you use the logic of "you get what you pay for," but any router will work that you purchase. Our installation fee induces router hook-up – which includes hooking up one wired and/or one wireless device at the time of installation. Set up of anything beyond two devices requires a Professional Router and Home Network Set up service, which is provided for a separate fee. The installation technician may or may not be available to complete a Professional Router and Home Network set up at the same time as the installation.

*Routers and surge protectors can be purchased from your local computer store , Wal-Mart, or often at your local home improvement store (such as Home Depot or Lowes).

  2. An operating Computer - Please have a working computer available for the Technician to plug an Ethernet cable into at the time of installation.

  3. Other Items of Notes
    Please put your dogs away.
Please make sure to open any necessary gates.
Please communicate with our Installation Technician, if you have any requests or questions feel free to ask. Our Installation Technicians are very friendly and helpful and will do their best to accommodate your needs and requests when possible.

Will the Technician make my WiFi work with my ipad/smartTV/kindle?

Our installation provides you with the internet via an Ethernet cable, which can plug into one PC, laptop,or a router. This means we will hook up one wired and/or one wireless device at the time of installation. Set up of anything beyond two devices requires a Professional Router and Home Network set up service, which is provided for a separate fee. The installation technician may or may not be available to complete a Professional Router and Home Network Set up at the same time as the installation.

What is an Internet Service Provider (or ISP)?

An Internet Service Provider (ISP) is a company (such as GigaLinx) that provides internet access to your home or business.

What is Wireless Internet?

Wireless Internet is a specific way of bringing high-speed broadband internet to your home or business. We install a small radio antenna at your home, pointing towards our local Access Point. This device captures an encrypted radio frequency, which is then run into your home using an Ethernet cable.

What is a fast internet speed and what is slow?

Generally, high speed internet can be 1 megabit per second (mbps) download or more. Dial-up is 56 kilobits (kbps) by comparison. Our packages range from 10 megabit per second to 25 megabits per second or depending on your needs, we do offer custom speeds from 25Mbps to over 1Gbps (1000+Mbps).

What speed should I get?

The speed of service you will want depends on what you like to use the internet for, as well as how many devices you intend to have on the internet. Our Basic service (10mbps) is perfect for those to use the internet to check emails, use online services such as banking,  watch videos online (such as Netflix and Hulu in HD), or play games online (such as World of Warcraft) or with gaming systems (X-Box, PS3). We recommend our Premium (25mbps) for those that desire more such as UHD video streaming, Large file transfers, and intense gaming. These speeds are also recommended if you have many devices that will be on the internet at the same time. Custom Packages are usually recommended for Commercial use, and may provide service in areas were most of our services are not available.

How do I change speeds after I start your service?

Switching to a higher or lower speed is very easy with us! All it takes is one phone call to our Service department. We can make this change right from our office, so there’s no need to have a technician come out! Billing will be adjusted on the day of the speed adjustment, and your regular billing will continue.

Do I need a router?

If you plan to use just one wired device, such as a PC or a laptop, then we will simply connect an Ethernet cable directly into your computer. You won’t need a router. Our installation comes with a free router hook-up – which means unboxing a preconfigured router and physically hooking up one wired and/or one wireless device at the time of installation. Free router hookup does not provide customized network names or customized security keys or passwords.

More complicated setup of routers, devices, including customized password, and network names, networked printers, and setups with more than 1 wired and 1 wireless devices requires a Professional Router and Home Network Set up service. Professional Router and Home Network device setup is $99.00 per hour with 1 hour minimum. Most setups require more or less 1 hour minimum. The installation technician may or may not be available to complete a Professional Router and Home Network set up at the same time as the installation. It is strongly advised that Pro Router and Home Network appointments be made to occur at the same time as an installation appointment. Please see our Installation FAQ page for more details.

My router is asking for a password, does GigaLinx keep track of that?

No. We do not store any wireless keys, passwords, or IDs. Usually, new routers come with a pre-printed card which has your router name and password printed on it, which is usually stored underneath the router or in some other storage location. To reset your router to the pre-printed factory default settings, look for the reset button on your router, or consult the manufacturer’s instructions for your device. Follow the instructions that came with your router or call the manufacturer directly for further assistance.

What happens if I reset my router to factory default settings?

If you press the reset button on your router, it basically wipes the router clean and resets it back to how it was out of the box. Any devices you have connected to it wirelessly will need to be connected again. Follow the instructions that came with your router or call the router manufacturer directly for assistance. GigaLinx can send a technician out to set your devices back online. The Professional Router and Home Network setup fee may apply if it is more then one device.
